A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
