A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation put forward on recently seeks to ban public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
