Resurgent Medvedev Claims Maiden Trophy in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's 21 titles have been earned on hard courts

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his initial trophy for nearly 30 months with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition championship match.

The Russian, a former top-ranked player, has endured a difficult year, winning just one match at the major tournaments and experiencing a difficult moment at the American major.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serve in specific - caused him dropping out of the top ten and eventually parting ways with former mentor Cervara.

Currently training with Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested three-set victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.

This marks Medvedev's initial trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hard surface since spring of that year.

The win also means he has won twenty-one championships at twenty-one distinct tournaments.

"It's the first time I'm at a tournament with my children at once, so to win a trophy is particularly special," said world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my child Victoria, because the initial championship I won when my first daughter her name was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the past champion, had lost his previous six title deciders, including in Halle in the past months.

Medvedev's counter-punching play style and recurring emotional displays on court had led some to question if his capacity to play at the top level was concluded.

But the athlete has made changes in the past month, making an effort to come to the net and perform positively, reinforced by an improved service.

Medvedev came back from a deficit in the first set against the difficult opponent, securing 4 of the last five games to go ahead.

The competitors swapped break points in the middle set before Moutet, bidding for his maiden professional title, took control to create a final set.

He saved four early break points in a close deciding set before the Russian won the break to that score to secure the win.

Appropriately, the winner clinched the win with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to manage a volley after over two and a half hours.
